I run my fingers over the keys. They feel smooth. Black, white, black again.. a drop of tear falls from my eye over the keys. I remember how I've longed for this piano. Nights filled with helpless weeping, days of wistfulness. My love, my precious..
I played Clair de lune..my fingers gently brushing the keys, as if being careful not to hurt them. Moon light was streaming through the window. I could feel the music flowing from within me, into the keys as the serene notes floated through the air.. like tiny wisps of smoke, swirling.
Serenity slowly turns to sadness, as the notes slowly transpose to Für elise. I could almost understand how Beethoven would have longed for that unknown girl. Music has a way of speaking to one's heart, and in my case, it was almost like the blood that flowed in my veins.
I remembered the past, the disappointment.. a little disappointment pricked my heart, that all those years of hurt was not swept away at that moment, when my wishes came true. Maybe some mortals feel things too deeply, too much for their own good.
Memories, at the end, that's all we have left. Of lost people, moments.. I wished I could crystallise them. Live through them.. I felt as if they were almost palpable.
What is real? What if the piano was too good to be true? Do senses lie? I thought I could hear voices in the distance.. A sense of awareness started creeping in...over me with every passing second.
My throat felt sore, and the air felt stifling. Everything seemed to hurt. As if I was being pierced by needles everywhere. I began to feel trapped, and I couldn't resist the urge to break free.
"You think she'll come around? It's been a week and she's not improving"
"Such a poor creature. Sad that the kids these days are so cowardly. Hiding behind masks of depression and all that. Back in my days, one just had to buck up and face the world. That's how we were raised"
"She'll be an ideal organ donor. No co-morbidities. Would you consent for your daughter? We can make necessary arrangements. How long are you going to wait?"
I wake up, as if breaking the water surface after a deep dive. I see the hospital bed near me. Is that me? Eyes closed, monitors beeping, with needles and tubes running like webs spun by an evil spider..
I remember.. there was no piano. Tears of grief. No one to hear me out.. everyone's laughing, whispering about the 'Freak'.. the one who has it all, yet never realises it. How tough can it be? to be brave?
The blood streaming from my wrists.. the blade glinting in the dark. My solace.. I'd be finally free. Did I want to wake up? I looked at the sad faces around me..anxious..waiting. I'd make them happy. I would want that, wouldn't I? May be I don't want to.
I stepped back. A sense of warmth engulfed me. Comfort as I'd never felt before.. I smiled to myself, and sighed with relief. The monitor's beep faded away.. I thought I heard a muffled cry somewhere.. I started fading..fading away into nothingness...bliss..
